My boss at work just told me we're going to be getting ten old Sun Rays that he found on eBay for something like $20 apiece. We're going to put a Sunfire v20z behind them, probably running Xen. That's a dual-Opteron beasty with 8GB of RAM. They're fast, and they'll be about a kajillion times better than my current 500MHz desktop. I'm really super excited about this.
Update 6 Apr: We got the Sunrays in today. They're exactly as awesome as I expected.
Chris says:
Umm why not just put solaris 10 on there, and use the sun rays as they’re meant to be used?
Chris says:
oh, btw

I’ve never liked Solaris as a desktop OS, and my cow-orkers agree. Solaris 10 is a big improvement, but it still feels.. I dunno.. clunky. And Redhat’s apt-get-like “up2date” thinger makes installing new packages and updating things a breeze. Solaris has a long way to go in that department.
Plus we don’t like using things “as they’re meant to be used”. I plan on filling my old SunBlade with snot as soon as we have the Sun Rays setup.
I like the new ones one a bunch. But they’re quite pricey for a thin client. We could buy top-of-the-line desktops for $1000. My upper-middle-of-the-line computer at home cost me half that much, and I think yours didn’t cost you much more.
